Do You Want To Heal From The Past Once And For All?

Have you gone through your whole life thinking: I’m just not good enough?

Do you have a tough time trusting others and opening up in relationships?

Deep down, does it feel like you just can’t seem to put the past behind you?

When you look at your life today, it’s clear that something isn’t right. Romantic relationships don’t seem to last, friends are lost over small disputes, and it feels nearly impossible to feel safe around other people. You’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop—that moment when you get betrayed or rejected and all the old hurts come back to haunt you. As a result, maybe you’re thinking it’s time to get some help and see a trauma therapist.

You Want To Begin Your Healing Journey. But You’re Not Sure Where To Start

When you’re struggling with trauma, it’s normal to find yourself over-spending, over-eating, over-drinking, and over-reacting. You’re constantly in go, go, go mode—trying to fulfill a million tasks, make everyone around you happy, and keep yourself busy 24/7. Yet in the end, part of you still feels empty, detached, and estranged—like you’re just not living your best life.

If this is how you feel, we’re happy you’re here. At Curious Conversations, our therapists are super passionate about helping trauma survivors like you. We want to help you heal old wounds, get in touch with the real you, and live with more pep in your step. The past does not define you, and it doesn’t have to hold you back in life.

There’s No Sugarcoating It: Trauma Is Everywhere

In a world full of patriarchy, inequality, misogyny, racism, and climate emergencies, trauma is an everyday part of many people’s lives. This is especially the case for BIPOC folks and those who live in marginalized communities. And in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, basically everyone alive today has been through trauma on a global scale.

Yet believe it or not, not every trauma comes about due to disease, disaster, or war. Sometimes trauma is mundane and takes place in the home. In many cases, trauma can look like being stuck in a toxic relationship, losing a loved one, or simply growing up in a home where you aren’t loved or accepted for who you are. All of these experiences can lead to lasting scars and dramatically affect the way you see the world.

Many People Go Through Trauma Without Even Knowing It

At Curious Conversations, clients often tell us that they’ve never experienced trauma—they say they had a “normal childhood” and their home life was “nothing out of the ordinary.” Yet when we ask who was there for them when it really mattered, they draw a blank.

The truth is that, when times were tough, many of us didn’t have someone we could run to, someone to guide us and walk with us through the darkness. This is a telltale sign of trauma. After all, sometimes trauma isn’t about what happened, but what didn’t happen—the love we didn’t get, the acceptance we didn’t receive.

In trauma therapy, you can unpack your childhood experiences and understand how you wound up where you are today. You can step out from the shadow of the past and embrace a brighter, better, and bolder future.

Tailoring Our Approach To Trauma Therapy

You can expect to leave sessions with a stronger connection to your inner child, a deeper awareness of your body, and a better understanding of how trauma impacts your life. Most importantly, counseling will be personalized for you—we don’t believe in taking a cookie-cutter approach, since everyone is different and everyone has unique needs and goals.

That said, there are several approaches that influence our practice most:

  • Brainspotting (BSP)—This somatic approach to therapy can help you overcome trauma by focusing on “brain spots” in your visual field while you work through painful memories. BSP is incredibly powerful—so powerful, in fact, that one BSP session is often as impactful as many talk therapy sessions!

  • Mindfulness—By pausing to notice your thoughts, emotions, and body sensations, you can connect to your inner child and begin the process of healing your deepest emotional wounds.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)—Using a combination of talk therapy and somatic work, IFS can help you take the insights that come up in Brainspotting and talk about them using the language of parts.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)—The goal of DBT is to give you practical skills for controlling your trauma responses and staying calm and grounded while you process painful memories.

If you want to check out the kind of results our practice gets, we encourage you to read our testimonials page. Over the years, we’ve been able to help so many clients heal from trauma, boost their confidence, and live their best lives—we want to do the same for you!

Yet we also believe that healing doesn’t always have to be serious business—we pride ourselves on being fun, relatable, authentic, and down-to-earth. We’re human just like you, and that’s why our approach is anything but clinical. We’ll help you put the pain of the past behind you while offering humor, hope, and real-life tools along the way.

You May Have Some Questions About Trauma Counseling…

What if talking about trauma makes me feel worse?

If you’ve spent years pushing down your trauma and telling yourself: just ignore it, it probably feels like discussing it will open up Pandora’s box. The great thing about approaches like Brainspotting is that they focus on giving you skills for soothing your nervous system so that you can process trauma without feeling scared or overwhelmed. What’s more, all our sessions will go at your own pace—you never have to worry about feeling in over your head when you’re with us!

How many trauma counseling sessions will it take to feel better?

Answer: it depends! Some people reach their goals in a few sessions, while others stick around for the long haul. Oftentimes, we’ll heal one issue only for other issues to arise later on, which is why many of our clients do therapy long-term. Regardless, we encourage you to be patient with yourself—sometimes slow and steady really does win the race, and every healing journey is different.

Is Brainspotting as effective as EMDR?

Brainspotting grew out of EMDR, so the two approaches are super similar. That said, Brainspotting is more flexible than EMDR and is a better fit for people who really value autonomy in sessions. It also allows for faster results than EMDR, since EMDR uses an eight-phase treatment model and Brainspotting is more of a short-term approach.

There are numerous studies that showcase Brainspotting’s amazing healing power, and it’s been very successful in helping the surviving family members of the Sandy Hook shooting victims recover from their traumas.
